4. “Chasing Mavericks” – THE MOVIE:

– “Young Jay Moriarity, like just about every other surfer along the central California coast those days had heard rumors of a giant wave, but it was dismissed largely as myth. One day though, Jay discovers someone who rides that wave – Frosty Hesson – and Jay sees the wave and Frosty and his surfing partners ride the wave at Mavericks. It takes some doing, but Frosty is finally convinced to train Jay for Mavericks. This movie is about what it takes to prepare not to ride a wave like Mavericks, but how to increase your chances of surviving it. That preparation requires physical, mental, spiritual, etc., development.

There is a good dose of surfing in the movie, and while there is a strong mental and spiritual component to the movie, it does not come across as eclectic or preachy. it’s just downright amazing! The sheer force and presence of the wave is awe-inspiring, and the willingness and ability of a small handful of big-wave surfers who challenge it and ride it are beyond impressive. It borders the miraculous. I mean, I’ve been held down by a waves in the 6-8′ range, so it’s nearly impossible to imagine the amount of force in a wave the size of Mavericks. It’s a wave that you feel more than you hear or see it. Sheer power! This is a movie experience not to be missed.” – ARH

5. The World Stormrider Guide:

– The Stormrider Guide has gained a legendary reputation amongst enthusiastic surfers. It features thorough, in-depth information about the best surf spots in the world, plus a whole lot of additional useful tips on where to go and where to avoid.

6. O’Neill Epic II 3/2 Wetsuit:

– The EPIC-series of wetsuits from O’Neill is high quality at a reasonable price. O’Neill wetsuits include a limited one-year manufacturer’s warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.

“The Epic II is designed with a “firewall” chest and back. This is because over 60% of the surf time is spent straddling the board with the chest being exposed to the cold wind and air. The hard neoprene chest blocks wind and retains heat around the chest and kidneys to keep the whole blood system warm. The warm blood then circulates to keep your extremities warm. There are no seams running down the Butt area so straddling the board does not put undue stress on the rear seams. Second about 30% of the time the surfer is paddling. The arms and shoulders have a thinner super-flex neoprene with no seams in the paddle areas. This is so there is little resistance when paddling. The neck has a soft and sticky neoprene that locks out the water from “flushing” through the suit when punching through waves. The fit is completely adjustable. Finally, the lower legs are a thinner and more flexible material that allow the surfer to bend the legs fully when taking off on a wave. There is also reinforced knee pads since some of my early “diving” wetsuit would wear holes in the knees from the constant scraping the board on take-off. CLICK LINK OR IMAGE to learn more.

These are all things that only a surfer would know about wetsuits. And Jack O’Neill is an expert.” – S. Bjork

7. Beginner’s surfboard: Foamie Board Surf Board

– Your friend always talking loudly about how they would like to start surfing? Treat them with a beginner’s foamie surfboard, and see if they can walk the walk. Comes with a free leash and traction pad. CLICK LINK OR IMAGE to see more specifications and reviews.

9. THE TOOL – The ultimate surf tool.

– The Tool comes equipped with: allen wrench, standard and phillips screwdrivers, a built in wax comb, one leash string, and leash hook. What you need for surfboard maintenance. CLICK THE LINK OR IMAGE to learn more.

“The Tool is the best, it has a practical use for every surfboard situation. You can use it to put the fins on and comb the wax on the board for traction without carring around a pocket full of screwdrivers or a wax comb. One small tool with many uses that fits right in your pocket! Great idea and this product is the best!” – D. Freedman

– Perfect for balance training, something you need heaps of when you are out surfing. Not only that, the indoboard is a good piece of fun workout equipment for the whole family. Click the link or image to learn more.

CHASING NAZARE GIANTS – with Mark Wengler.

CHASING NAZARE GIANTS – with Mark Wengler.

28th October 2013…

A date that will forever be remembered in surf history. Nazaré, Portugal, an area known as a tow-in paradise, witnessed what is being deemed the world’s biggest swell, as waves crashed in with tremendous, potentially lethal force. Mark Wengler was there to see the monsters up-close, and the surfers who fight them for a living.

We had a chat with him about the adrenaline-surging experience – and was also allowed an EXCLUSIVE feature of some of his finest photography taken during the tow-in sessions that would forever change surfing. Sit back, read the interview and ogle at the form and curves of these Portuguese oceanic beauties.

Andrew Cotton on a mighty wave

How are you doing, Mark? What have you been up to since our last interview?

MW: Well you know life’s a bitch, so you better enjoy every moment of it, cause you never know what tomorrow brings, but so far I’m still here on our amazing blue planet.
I just cam home from Portugal where I’ve been shooting the Rip Curl Pro event, but to be honest somehow I got a bit bored from all the hype. And since everybody are shooting the same pics, there is no real magic to it for me.

But Portugal offers so much more and it is one of my absolute favorite destinations in Europe. Great surf, awesome people and simply some of the best sea food on the European continent…it’s like a part of my soul never really leave Portugal when I go back to Denmark, I honestly feel very much at home down there.

Morning has broken - surf awaits.
Morning has broken – surf awaits.

NAZARE, Portugal… you were actually there! What was it like to see those gigantic waves up-close and personal?

MW: Yes I was there on that “Magic Monday” and I can assure you it was beyond anything I ever experienced before. Somehow It changed something inside of me, nothing will ever be the same. This place is SO powerful, beautiful and magical. Nazaré has an interesting history, especially the fishing has always been a huge part of Nazaré and it’s people have always battled this powerful ocean and coastline.

I saw the “Power Low” developing and moving towards the Portuguese coast, when I was in Peniche shooting Rip Curl Pro, so I started following it closely and after a while there was no doubt in my mind, this “Low” would definitely hit the Portuguese coast. So I decided to drive up there to check it out on one of the “lay days” at the Rip Curl Pro and I instantly felt the attraction to this place. So I extended my trip for 5 days, moved up there… waiting for things to happen… and they did!!

Tag teaming a beast of a wave
Tag teaming a beast of a wave

What about the big wave surfers? Did you get to meet any of them? What was your impression?

MW: I was so privileged to meet Garrett McNamara and his wonderful wife Nicole, also met Andrew Cotton, Hugo Vau, Nizan Benhaim plus all the rest of these fantastic people behind the McNamara crew, just such great ocean spirits all of them. So focused, yet so positive and relaxed and down to earth at the same time.
Spending time with this amazing group of top professional athletes, just getting the opportunity to explore their amazing world of Big Wave Surfing from a little distance, made me very humble and I feel very privileged to have been a small part of it all. It is exactly what I am looking for within surfing photography. It’s just so pure, unique and raw.

And it really struck me how Mr. McNamara always finds time to spend a moment with everything from old ladies to young boys, always kind and very positive to everyone – such a great living legend. Andrew Cotton, Hugo Vau and Nizan Benhaim were also very pleasant company, and I hope I will see them all again in the near future…

Hugo Vau sizing up the waves.

Your favorite photo taken during this big wave session?

MW: Ohhh…difficult one!! Shot so many pics… but the morning we arrived at the Lighthouse when the “Magic Monday” was going off – that day the light was really special. Like something was just waiting to happen… Everything was purple for 5 minutes just before sunrise. So I guess that picture… it gives me such an amazing feeling just looking at it – reminiscing what it was like.

I was located on the roof of the lighthouse with a bunch of other people, just as the sun slowly came up over the horizon. I realized how big these waves, and how dangerous this day would be for the surfers going in to battle. But it wasn’t “just” the huge waves which posed a danger zone… it was also the “Hot Pot” (a very hardcore area with lots of current and rocks) close by the rocks that really made everything very sketchy. You have to be extremely focused and very skilled to surf in these conditions. This place only appeals to the very best surfers in the world.

Pure morning.
Pure morning.

Where are you going next? What’s next on the agenda?

MW: I’m open for everything, I just follow the “Power Low’s” and see where it brings me… maybe Mullaghmore? Talked with Andrew Cotton about visiting Ireland one day, when it’s working up there. But chasing the “Big Wave scene” certainly appeals to me, and it’s what I will try to focus on as much as l possibly can in the future.

That sounds amazing, Mark. We hope you get to follow your dream and keep chasing these giants – we look forward to seeing the photos and to hear about it. Stay stoked, Mark.

Surfing EL SALVADOR – with the Mizata Point Resort.

Surfing El Salvador – with the Mizata Point Resort.

El Salvador, even though it is by far the smallest country based on land mass in Central America, can boast about having some of the best and most consistent surfing waves in the world. Fed by the same south swell that feeds all of Central America, Mexico and the North American coast line, El Salvador’s beaches lie the right direction to capitalize on that continuous south swell coming off of Australia.

Situated between Guatemala on it’s northen border and Honduras/Nicaragua on it’s southern border, El Salvador is often overlooked as a surfer’s destination….their mistake.

Surfing El Salvador.
Surfing El Salvador.

While so many know of Costa Rica’s famous surf, so few realize that the waves in El Salvador rival or excel those of Costa Rica. We have several right point breaks and even more beach breaks, some soft and slidey like California breaks, others strong and fast like Hawaii, and many that barrel like Nicaragua, all of them within a 3 hour drive of each other. Punta Roca is called the J Bay of Central America, due to it’s long, long breaking right from the point to the pier. Mizata, on the other hand, has a fast, strong right point break toward the cliff, which intimidates many but thrills so many others.

El Salvador has suffered from bad publicity, thanks in part to the US State Department’s incorrect label of a “dangerous place to travel”. Of course El Salvador has crime, as does every city/country in the world. Is it excessive crime and liable to affect your surf trip? Absolutely not. The fact is El Salvador is a nation of hard working friendly people, who welcome tourists with smiles and handshakes. Involved in a civil war with Nicaragua in the 80’s, known as the Contra /Sandinista war, which was made famous in the US due to the clandestine activities of Oliver North and the CIA, that war has been over for more than 20 years. Today, El Salvador, has a democratic government that holds elections every 6 years, not allowing the same president to run again, unlike Venezuela and Chavez.

The following is a description of the majority of El Salvador’s breaks.

The coastline of El Salvador is divided into two parts:

– La Libertad

– Mizata

Right point and 3 beach breaks. Wave magnet. Needs small-medium size swell. The Point breaks best on the up swell, the beach breaks are better on the high tide. Home of Mizata Point Resort.

Surfing El Salvador: The Mizata Point resort

Mizata Point Resort was built with the mature surfer in mind. So many of our older surfers took “surf safaris” to Mexico and occasionally Central America in Volkswagen Vans ,Woodies and other vintage cars the 60’s and 70’s, before it was the norm to fly in to surf locations throughout the world. Those surfers always carried a dream with them to one day live in a tropical paradise with warm water and surf year around. When the owner of Mizata Point Resort, an ex-pat, saw the location and swell at Mizata, he realized a vision that could give those Boomer surfers a location where they could re live that almost forgotten dream of living in a tropical paradise and surf the uncrowded waves that they so well recall in the days of their youth. Built with individual cabanas, all with an unobstructed view of the consistent break from their private decks, it is the exception, not the norm of surf accommodations here in El Salvador. Now, the most difficult obstacle in the way of a Boomer surfer is going on a surf trip, is going alone. Most are married, many with children. Mizata Point Resort thought about this when the resort was built and took into account their ladies. All the rooms have air conditioning, Hot water, Sat Tv , King or Queen size beds, all with nice linens. Even if they don’t surf the ladies, or men, can sit in the infinity edge pool and watch their soul mates surf The Point. The owner also wanted to bring a different menu to El Salvador, so nationals and foreigners alike could try foods not from El Salvador itself. Beer Can Chicken, Mom’s Meatloaf, Baja Fish Tacos, just to name a few, along with Salvadorian favorites, such as Fried Whole fish, grilled Snook, or Wahoo and Tuna, when available. Great shrimp plates and oh yes, the best Cheeseburger in the country.

Surfing El Salvador: Mizata Point resort motto

The motto here at Mizata Point Resort is “ Where peace and tranquility meet great surf”. The owner and staff work very hard to live up to that motto and treat every guest like part of the family. The resort has held the #1 hotel in la Libertad on Trip Advisor for more than a year. You can contact them at mizatapointresort.com and see for yourself what Mizata Point Resort and El Salvador have to offer the surfing, or non-surfing traveler. While it is situated and caters to the traveling surfer, Mizata Point Resort can be enjoyed by all. El Salvador is like Southern California in the sense that one can be at the beach and an hour and a half later be high in the mountains, visiting coffee plantations or riding a zip line, exploring the quaint artistic towns that dot the landscape or swim under a cascading waterfall, in the shadow of a volcano.

Hopefully this article gave you an insight to Central Americas most misunderstood and undiscovered country, El Salvador, and if you are aware of it, quelled some fears that are unfairly bestowed on it by people who sit in tiny cubicles and pass judgment using yesterday’s news.

Maya Gabeira wipeout and rescue – video footage.

New video footage of Maya Gabeira’s nasty wipeout at Nazare, Portugal, with the following rescue – headlined by the brave Carlos Burle.

Maya Gabeira’s wipeout at Nazare is already being lined up for the “wipeout of the year”-award at the Billabong XXL Big wave awards 2014 – a prize claimed Chris Shanahan last year in 2013. Maya’s fall on the colossus wave at Nazare left her knackered and battered in the unforgiving whitewater with what later diagnostic imaging showed to be a broken ankle. The dramatic footage shows Brazilian Carlos Burle, a true hero, sweeping in on jetski shortly after Maya’s wipeout to aid her as she struggles in the immense power of the waves – help which she arguably would have drowned without, as seconds later she goes unconscious in the wild water, floating head down. Carlos Burle unselfishly ditches his jetski and jumps into the water – swimming with her to the shore where help awaits.

The Maya Gabeira wipeout:

The rescue – headlined by Carlos Burle:

Maya later reported on her facebook page that she got away from the incident with a heavy battering and a broken ankle, and that she is doing OK. We’re wishing her a speedy recovery, and would like to send our biggest respect to both Maya and Carlos. True heroes, the both of them.
