Gunnar Schmauss Photography – Florida Surf Photography.

Gunnar Schmauss is a 21-year old photographer born and raised in sunny Florida, a place most people associate with sunshine, surf, urban living, old people and alligator wrestling – all in a lovely blend. In the words of american novelist Karen Russell;

“I  spent most of my 20s with these alligator wrestlers in the swamps of South  Florida.”

However, we are not going to be talking about old people or alligator wrestling… we have in fact interviewed Gunnar Schmauss and in the process of doing so, we have had the honour of seeing some of his amazing photography; here is the result.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

GS: My name is Gunnar Schmauss. I’m a surf photographer born and raised on the East Coast of Florida and I am 21 years old.

How did you first get into photography? What inspired you?

GS: I got my first little point-n-shoot camera when I was 13. I used it to take pictures of my friends skateboarding and surf. I even had a little waterproof bag to put it in so I could shoot photos in the water. I always looking through Surfer Magazine and Bodyboarder Magazine to look at all the exotic locations where the waves were perfect. I want to thank Clark Little, Willem Ungerman, Robbie Crawford, Zak Noyle, Ray Collins and Chris Burkard plus many other extremely talented photographers for inspiring me through the images they all share. Keeps me motivated to hunt for that perfect photo.

Do you have any good tips for photographers out there when it comes to water/surf photography?

GS: Always keep your gear clean. Respect the ocean and know your limits when swimming. But most importantly… always have fun!

What time of day is the best for shooting photos?

GS: The best time to shoot depends on the area where you live and the coastline. For me, it’s when the sun starts to set in the afternoon and the light reflects off of  the waves providing the best colors.

Do you have any recommendations when it comes to camera gear?

GS: When shooting in the water I use a Canon DSLR with an SPL Waterhousing and fisheye lens. I really love Canon cameras but it’s a matter of the user’s preference. The fisheye is the key to getting close shots in the barrel but when I shoot from the beach I use lenses from 100-400mm so to ensure a close and crisp shot.

What is your favorite surf spot?

GS: My favorite surf spot would have to be South Beach Miami haha of all places. I’ve been able to score some of the best surf I have ever seen there. It rarely breaks, but when it does, it’s all time!
