Fat Wave Photography – with Corey Walter.
Corey Walter is the man behind Fat Wave Photography. Make no mistake about it, his photography skills are fat and juicy – and you might just catch a bit of Diabetes Mellitus type 2 if you stare direcly at his photos for too long. We had a friendly chat with the man behind the lens. Enjoy.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
CW: Well, I’m Corey Walter and I live in beautiful Encinitas, California. I love everything about surfing. It is not just a sport, but a way of life for me. Being in the water is where I like to be as much as possible. It’s like therapy for me. Haha! If I go a week or so without being in the ocean I start to get real grumpy. I grew up away from the ocean, but always loved going on trips. I would be so stoked upon arriving at the beach, and when I saw the crisp, blue water smiling back at me – I felt at peace.
How did you first get into photography?
CW: I have always taken photos and started learning photography when I was back in college. My mom is an artist and art teacher and I guess that’s where I get my artistic ability, just through a different medium. I actually just got my first housing from SPL on my birthday this year in February. I have been out in the water almost every day taking photos since then. When I really enjoy something I have a tendency to devote all my energy to it.
Do you have a favorite surf spot?
CW: My favorite spots to surf are Trestles and Cottons in South Orange County, California. Well, actually my favorite spot is Witches Rock. Back in 2011, some good friends and I took a trip to Costa Rica. This was by far the best trip I have ever been on in my entire life. I would say my favorite place to shoot is Blacks in La Jolla, California. I hope to make some day trips down to Baja soon too…
Who do you think will win the ASP tour 2013?
CW: I’d have to say Slater, he’s still the man!
We agree! Where can Superstoked’s readers find more of your work?
CW: I have a website www.fatwavephotography.com, prints and digital downloads are available here. I am also featured in the local pros section on www.surfline.com. You can also follow me onwww.facebook.com/fatwavephotography and Instagram @fat_wave_photography.
