“I am free…” Pro Surfer Richard Lange.
Ricardo Lange from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, was born to surf.
Already at the age of 7, he had developed a yearning and passion towards surfing and the surroundings which came with it. He started his professional career in Brazil, but later decided to represent Germany in competitions as he holds a dual-citizenship. In 2009 and 2010 he won the Germany nationals – and ranked within the top 45 of the european WQS. We had a little chat with him:
Hi Ricardo! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
RL: Hi! First of all – I’m Ricardo Lange, I was born 13 of april 1987 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. I started surfing when I was 7 years old, and participated in my first contest at the age of 9. When i turned 11 I got my first sponsor, and from then on things just started adding up. In 2001, my family and I moved to Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is the city where Bruno Santos, one of the best tube riders came from. In 2007 I started my professional career in Brazil – but then decided to represent Germany as I hold both passports; brazilian and german. In 2009 I became German surf champ and for two years I’ve been top 45 in the european WQS tour. Now I have stopped with contests as I can express my self better as free Surfer.
Quite similar to Laird Hamilton in many ways… what is it like to be a professional surfer?
RL: Becoming – and being – a professional surfer is like a dream come true, but it’s a lot of work!! I just love the sensation of freedom and interaction with nature and God!
Do you have any favorite surf spots? In your opinion, what is the best surf spot in the whole world?
RL: I love sooooo many of them.. but my favorite Spot is “Ribeira D’ilhas”, Ericeira, Portugal, and “Itacoatiara”, Niterói, Brazil. In my opinion the best surf spot is probably Trestles, USA!
Tell us a bit about your boards – do you have a favorite size and brand?
RL: I usually surf with a 6,1″. 18 1/2″. 2 1/4″ – any board that works really well. I love it! I don’t have a favorite brand… but D’Arcy Surfboards (Australia) and D.F. 50 Surfboards (Portugal) made me some great ones. Thanks!
Which song/artist are digging at the moment?
RL: I like 30 seconds to mars… 🙂
Want to give a shout-out to some of your sponsors / supporters?
RL: I really would like to say thanks to God – and to Murillo Meira Surfboards (Brazil).
Where can Superstoked Magazine readers follow your progress and life as a free surfer?
RL: They can follow me on my facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/RicardoLangefreesurfer (Photos, videos and day-by-day highlights from professional surfer Ricardo Lange).
Thank you for the interview, Ricardo! We wish you all the best onwards! Stay stoked!
